Six Ladies represented JRCC in the VSGA State Team Matches at Wintergreen, placing 2nd in their flight. The team consisted of team captain Sandy Schuler, Amanda Kelley, Jennifer Stevens, Barbara Deyong, Joan Verhoef and Patti Brown.
What was scheduled to be a 3-day competition was shortened to 2 days of match play due to heavy fog which canceled play in the opening day. The JRCC team was seeded 3rd in their flight and upset 2nd-seeded Greenbrier Country Club in the opening round of four ball match play. The team of Sandy Schuler and Barbara Deyong led the way, winning 13 of 18 points in their match. The team of Amanda Kelley and Patti Brown poured on another 12.5 points to lead JRCC to the win.
With the win over Greenbrier, JRCC advanced to the finals of match play, facing top-seeded Belmont. Belmont managed to best the sides of Amanda Kelley/Patti Brown, Sandy Schuler/Barbara Deyong and Joan Verhoef/Jennifer Stevens for the title.
Despite the loss in the finals, the JRCC team showed great promise. Last year, based on aggregate handicaps of team members, JRCC did not qualify for the 24-team tournament. This year, JRCC qualified for a reduced field of 16 teams due to COVID and played competitive matches against strong teams. Gaining this tournament experience, JRCC looks to continue the momentum into 2021.
